Months 1-3: Foundational Knowledge in Specialist Support
Learners begin with an in-depth exploration of the Specialist Teaching Assistant role, focusing on establishing a strong foundation in educational theories, child development stages, and cognitive, social, and emotional learning needs. This module covers safeguarding principles, legal frameworks, and ethical considerations essential for working in educational environments. This phase delves into inclusive education principles, with a particular focus on supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Months 7–9: Behaviour Management and Emotional Support
Learners will acquire advanced knowledge in behaviour management strategies and emotional support techniques. This includes understanding the psychological and environmental factors influencing behaviour, conflict resolution skills, and de-escalation techniques. Key topics include positive behaviour support, restorative practices, and the development of behaviour intervention plans. Emphasis is placed on fostering emotional resilience and mental health awareness and promoting pupil well-being. -
Months 10–12: Literacy, Numeracy, and Educational Technology Integration
This combined module focuses on effective literacy and numeracy support techniques alongside the integration of educational technology to enhance learning outcomes. Learners will develop strategies to support reading comprehension, phonics, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Additionally, they will explore the use of digital tools, assistive technologies, and online learning platforms to differentiate instruction, engage learners, and track academic progress effectively. -
Months 16–18: End-Point Assessment (EPA) Preparation and Completion
Learners transition to the EPA phase, where they focus on preparing for the final assessment components. This includes completing a professional portfolio showcasing their knowledge, skills, and behaviours aligned with the apprenticeship standard. Learners will engage in mock professional discussions, reflective accounts, and practice assessments to build confidence.
