Learning Journey

  • Months 1-3: Foundation in Sports Turf Management

    In the first three months, learners will start with a comprehensive introduction to advanced sports turf management, focusing on understanding the role and responsibilities of a sports turf technician. This phase includes an in-depth study of health and safety practices specific to turf operations, ensuring learners are well-versed in creating a safe working environment and complying with relevant regulations.

  • Months 4-6: Turf and Soil Science

    From months four to six, learners will delve into the science of turfgrass management, gaining an understanding of advanced aspects of turfgrass species and their management. This period also covers soil and plant science and nutrition, where learners will study soil health and nutrition, and learn techniques for optimising plant growth and health.

  • Months 7-9: Water and Irrigation Management

    During months seven to nine, the focus shifts to water management, including the effective use and conservation of water resources and the design and maintenance of irrigation systems. Learners will also cover drainage systems, learning to plan, manage, and maintain these systems, and understanding the importance of water management on the golf course.

  • Months 10–12: Pest and Disease Control

    In months ten to twelve, learners will address integrated pest management, identifying and controlling pests, weeds, and diseases with sustainable practices. This stage also covers pathology and plant health, where learners will understand plant pathology and its impact on turf health, and develop strategies for disease prevention and treatment.

  • Months 13-15: Machinery and Equipment Management

    From months thirteen to fifteen, learners will concentrate on machinery maintenance and safety, learning routine maintenance and safety procedures for golf course machinery, and managing the lifecycle of equipment. Additionally, this stage includes technology and data management, focusing on using technology and data to manage the golf course and implementing effective communication and record-keeping systems.

  • Months 16–18: Leadership and Team Management

    During months sixteen to eighteen, the programme focuses on team leadership and development, covering recruiting, selecting, and inducting staff, as well as performance management and training. Learners will also learn conflict resolution and motivation techniques, managing conflict, discipline, and grievances, and motivating and encouraging excellence within the team.

  • Months 19–21: Business and Customer Service

    In the final three months of on-programme learning, learners will study business management and strategy, including developing and reviewing the Golf Course Policy document, and preparing and managing budgets. This stage also covers customer service excellence, promoting the golf club and its core values, and encouraging a customer service culture within the team.

  • Months 22–24: EPA Preparation

    The last stage of the apprenticeship, from months twenty-two to twenty-four, is dedicated to End-Point Assessment (EPA) preparation. This includes a comprehensive review of knowledge, skills, and behaviours acquired throughout the programme, with mock assessments and feedback sessions to ensure readiness for the EPA. Additionally, learners will focus on professional development, preparing written and verbal presentations for the EPA and ensuring long-term career growth.
