Learning Journey

  • Months 1-3: Financial Reporting and Data Management

Apprentices start by assisting in the preparation of financial reports and maintaining accurate records. They are responsible for entering data, preparing monthly and year-end accounts, and supporting audits. Apprentices also play a key role in ensuring the accuracy of financial data and adhering to compliance procedures, such as preventing suspicious activities, including anti-money laundering practices.

  • Months 4-6: Cost Management and VAT Compliance

Apprentices develop skills in managing costs and supporting the budgeting process, analysing variances, and preparing reports for management decision-making. A key focus is on VAT compliance, where apprentices assist in preparing and submitting VAT returns, ensuring the organisation meets its VAT obligations. They gain a deeper understanding of tax regulations and the importance of accurate reporting to HMRC.

  • Months 7-9: Digital Systems and Stakeholder Communication

During this phase, apprentices focus on mastering accounting software and digital financial systems. They help manage and maintain these systems securely while ensuring compliance with data protection regulations. Apprentices also learn to communicate financial information effectively to both finance professionals and other stakeholders, supporting decision-making processes across the business.

  • Months 10–12: Final Preparation and Synoptic Assessment

In the final months, apprentices consolidate their knowledge by applying financial skills to real-world scenarios. They complete tasks such as preparing financial statements, ensuring VAT compliance, and supporting cost control. This phase also includes preparing for the Synoptic Assessment, finalising portfolios that demonstrate competence across all aspects of the role.

  • Months 13–15: End-Point Assessment (EPA)

Complete the apprenticeship with the EPA, which includes a knowledge test and professional discussion. Successful completion will certify them as a proficient Level 3 Assistant Accountant, ready to contribute significantly to their employer’s finance team.
