This programme equips you with the practical skills, environmental knowledge, and technical expertise needed to create and maintain safe, sustainable, and high-quality outdoor environments.

Building Core Knowledge and Safety

Months 1–4

Learners develop a strong foundation in health and safety, communication, and industry awareness. They will understand workplace standards, sustainability practices, and the importance of green spaces while learning how their role contributes to business success.

 

Developing Practical Skills and Techniques

Months 5–9

This stage focuses on using tools and machinery safely, plant identification, and environmental practices. Learners will build confidence in maintaining equipment, identifying plants, pests, and diseases, and supporting day to day horticulture and landscaping tasks.

Advancing Technical Knowledge

Months 10–14

Learners deepen their understanding of soil science, plant health, and cultivation systems. They will develop skills in irrigation, turf and planting maintenance, and site preparation, applying techniques across a range of outdoor environments.

Specialisation and End Point Assessment

Months 15–18

Learners specialise in either horticulture or landscape construction, developing advanced practical skills in their chosen pathway. The programme concludes with the End Point Assessment, where they demonstrate full competence through practical tasks, a knowledge test, and a professional discussion.

Apprentices can work across a wide range of environments, including parks, gardens, estates, housing developments, commercial landscapes, and public spaces. Depending on the employer, this may include both soft landscaping, such as planting and maintenance, and hard landscaping, such as paving, structures, and site preparation.

Apprentices will develop hands-on skills, including planting, maintaining green spaces, soil preparation, turf care, and supporting landscape construction. They will also learn how to use tools and machinery safely, identify plants and materials, and carry out work to industry standards.

Progress is tracked through regular reviews with the training provider and employer. Apprentices build a portfolio of evidence, complete practical tasks in the workplace, and receive ongoing feedback to ensure they are developing the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours.


 

At the end of the programme, apprentices complete an End Point Assessment which includes a practical assessment, a knowledge test, and a professional discussion. Successful completion leads to a nationally recognised Level 2 apprenticeship qualification.

After completing the Level 2 apprenticeship, learners can progress into more advanced roles or move onto further training, such as Level 3 programmes, developing specialist skills within horticulture or landscape construction.
