Learning Journey

  • Months 1–3: Building a Strong Foundation

    Learners will focus on health and safety practices, effective communication, and industry knowledge. They will gain an understanding of workplace safety standards, sustainable practices, and the importance of green spaces. Additionally, they will develop communication skills and learn how their contributions impact business success.

  • Months 4–6: Mastering Tools, Machinery, and Environmental Practices

    This phase emphasises environmental protection, safe operation of tools and machinery, and plant identification. Apprentices will learn to maintain horticultural equipment, implement pollution prevention strategies, and identify plants, pests, and diseases while applying effective control measures.

  • Months 7–9: Exploring Soil Science and Cultivation Systems

    The focus shifts to soil science, plant health, and cultivation techniques. Learners will deepen their understanding of plant growth, soil composition, and irrigation systems while mastering techniques to maintain and enhance plant health across diverse environments.

  • Months 10–12: Preparing for Advanced Applications

    In this stage, apprentices will develop skills in turf management, site preparation, and sustainability practices. Horticulture learners will focus on preparing sports grounds and seasonal planting, while landscape construction learners will gain expertise in measuring and preparing sites for advanced landscaping projects.

  • Months 13–15: Specialising in Your Pathway

    Apprentices choose between horticulture or landscape construction specialisms. Horticulture operatives will advance their skills in plant propagation, ornamental turf maintenance, and soft landscaping. Landscape construction operatives will focus on constructing and maintaining hard features, including paved surfaces, walls, and drainage systems.

  • Months 16–18: Demonstrating Mastery in the EPA

    The final stage involves preparation and completion of the End-Point Assessment. Apprentices will showcase their skills through a practical assessment, a multiple-choice knowledge test, and a professional discussion supported by their portfolio, demonstrating full competence in their chosen specialism.
