This programme is designed to develop the practical skills, turf management knowledge, and technical understanding needed to maintain golf courses to professional standards.
Foundations of Golf Course Maintenance
Months 1–4
Learners are introduced to the role of a Golf Greenkeeper and the structure of golf courses. They develop core knowledge of health and safety, safe machinery use, and the fundamentals of maintaining greens, tees, fairways, and rough areas.
Turfgrass and Soil Management
Months 5–8
The focus shifts to understanding turfgrass species and soil health. Learners explore mowing practices, aeration techniques, and the principles of maintaining healthy playing surfaces throughout the season.
Turf Care and Irrigation
Months 9–12
Learners develop skills in fertilisation, top dressing, and irrigation management. They learn how water, nutrients, and soil conditions affect turf performance and how to maintain consistent playing quality.
Course Preparation and EPA Readiness
Months 13–18
In the final stage, learners focus on preparing courses for play, maintaining equipment, and refining practical greenkeeping skills. The programme concludes with preparation for the End Point Assessment, including knowledge tests, practical observation, and professional discussion

The programme is designed to work alongside normal greenkeeping duties. Apprentices continue working on the course while developing their skills, applying what they learn directly to day-to-day tasks such as course preparation, turf care, and equipment use. Training is scheduled to minimise disruption to course operations.
No prior experience is required. The programme is designed to introduce learners to golf course maintenance from the ground up, covering everything from plant and turf identification to machinery operation and safe working practices.
Employers receive ongoing support from the training provider throughout the programme. This includes progress reviews, guidance on developing the apprentice’s skills in the workplace, and support preparing the apprentice for their final assessment.
After completing the Level 2 Golf Greenkeeper apprenticeship, learners can progress into more advanced greenkeeping roles or continue their development through qualifications such as the Level 3 Advanced Sports Turf Technician or other specialist turf management pathways.
The apprenticeship allows clubs to train new staff within their own working environment. Apprentices learn the specific maintenance standards, equipment, and course management practices used by the club, helping organisations develop skilled professionals who understand their course and team.
