Learning Journey

  • Months 1–3: Foundation Knowledge

In the first three months, learners will establish a foundational understanding of their role and responsibilities as early years practitioners. This period begins with the module on "The Role of an Early Years Practitioner," which emphasises the importance of the practitioner’s role, their responsibilities, and their impact on children's learning and development. Following this, the "Health and Safety" module covers basic principles, risk assessments, emergency procedures, and promoting a safe environment for children. The final module in this phase, "Safeguarding in a Childcare Setting," focuses on recognising signs of abuse and neglect, understanding safeguarding policies, and the procedures for reporting concerns.

  • Months 4–6: Developing Core Skills

During months four to six, learners will build on their foundational knowledge by developing core skills essential for their practice. The "Child Development" module provides insights into the stages of child development, observation techniques, and ways to promote physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. This is followed by the "Communication with Children" module, which teaches techniques for effective communication, including active listening, non-verbal communication, and engaging with children at their level.

  • Months 7-9: Applied Practice

From months seven to nine, learners will apply their knowledge and skills in practical settings. The "Supporting Activities, Purposeful Play, and Educational Programme" module focuses on planning and organising activities, understanding the importance of play, and creating stimulating learning environments. The "Supporting Children with SEND" module follows, providing strategies for identifying and supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities, understanding individual needs, and collaborating with specialists and families.

  • Months 10–12: Collaboration and Well-Being

In the final phase of on-programme learning, months ten to twelve, the focus shifts to collaboration and promoting well-being. The "Working with Others in Early Years" module covers teamwork, building professional relationships, and collaboration strategies to support children's development. The "Principles of Well-being in Children" module delves into understanding children's emotional and mental health, promoting positive behaviours, and creating a nurturing environment.

  • Months 13–15: End-Point Assessment (EPA) Preparation

The last three months, months thirteen to fifteen, are dedicated to preparing for the End-Point Assessment (EPA). This period includes a review and consolidation of key concepts and practical skills, along with mock assessments to build confidence and readiness for the final EPA.
