Learning Journey

  • Months 1-3:  Introduction to Bookkeeping and Controls

Apprentices focus on Introduction to Bookkeeping (ITBK) and Principles of Bookkeeping Controls (POBC), learning double-entry bookkeeping, ledger maintenance, and reconciliations. They gain hands-on experience with accounting software and are introduced to key tasks like processing invoices and posting journal entries, directly aligning with the duties of an Accounts/Finance Assistant.

  • Months 4-6: Costing and Business Financial Principles

This phase covers Principles of Costing (PCTN) and The Business Environment (BESY). Apprentices learn to calculate and allocate costs, assist in budgeting, and understand the wider business context, including ethics and financial reporting. These skills support their responsibilities in managing costs and communicating financial information effectively.

  • Months 7-9: Financial Statements and Payroll Assistance

Apprentices advance to preparing simple financial statements and assisting with payroll processes. This period focuses on supporting month-end processes, managing payroll records, and ensuring tax compliance. These duties help build key skills needed for an Accounts/Finance Assistant, including financial reporting and payroll support.

  • Months 10-12: Synoptic Assessment and Final Preparation

Apprentices prepare for the Synoptic Assessment, consolidating all learning through practical applications. They refine skills in bookkeeping, costing, and financial reporting while building their portfolios. This phase ensures they are fully equipped to meet workplace expectations and support the finance team effectively.

  • Month 13: End-Point Assessment (EPA)

Complete the apprenticeship with the EPA, encompassing a structured interview, a multiple-choice test, and a thorough review of the apprentice’s portfolio. Successful completion will validate them as a proficient Level 2 Accounts/Finance Assistant, prepared to make significant contributions to their employer’s finance team.
